We are looking for unique, high-quality, handmade products to feature in our upcoming Spring Gift Guide. The Guide will include Spring items in bright or pastel Spring colors. If you have a new Spring line to introduce, now is the time! As always, earth friendly items are a big priority.

I was born in Buffalo, NY, and began making oddities at an early age. I have been working as artist ever since bartering sketches for fruit roll-ups during lunch at the advanced age of 5.

I now live and work in Washington, D.C., where I teach art to exceptional students at Eastern Senior High School. My studio on Capitol Hill is currently overflowing with wax, smudged paint, and bits of glass, and emits both sweet smells and strange noises at all hours of the night.

I enjoy degree collecting (philosophy, painting, and special education so far) making messes (in the kitchen and garden,) reading, sleeping in, and cat herding.

MY MISSION:

I want to make art that people want in their homes, their sacred spaces, their places of work.

Not because it matches the color scheme, but because it touches something in the people who make those spaces meaningful. Because it draws out their dreams, or lends tranquility, or makes it impossible to forget a horrible truth they are working to change.

In my mind, successful art means something to us about ourselves, the way the books I love are a part of my home and its meaning. Michael from Stranger in a Strange Land reminds me to Grok- drink deep of the moment. Merlin from The Once and Future King cautions me that might never makes right. The Gunslinger helps me remember the face of my father. Lovecraftian monsters haunt my steps and keep me on my toes.

It is my dream to make art that fits into the tapestry of others’ lives, the way my studio is covered in the images of places and works that inspire and guide me. I want to be connected in the way readers are, in the way long distance lovers are by letters and photos. Museums are too sterile for this kind of touch to work. Trading artwork with other artists, making customized works- these are things I need to begin seeking in earnest, and this is my starting point.

I went to art school in England in the 1970’s, but really found my calling with jewelry design. I have been making jewelry for many years but started seriously designing in the early 90’s.

I actually started crafting when I was fifteen, in the 60’s. That was a great time for doing handmade and fantastically inventive things. My friend had a shop that sold crafty items from the East and locally handmade jewelry, clothing and pottery. Those were fun times !

I never looked back. I spent time in Europe and Asia, studying and working in different areas of the jewelry business. Asia was awe inspiring in relation to handmade items. They can make almost anything at all out almost nothing at all. I love making jewelry and will keep working on new and wonderful pieces.

I started to make jewelry because I saw a pair of earrings in a shop that I loved. I was a student and could no way afford them. They didn’t look complicated, though and I decided I could make some like them. Well, of course a spool of wire makes many more than 1 pair of earrings, so all the females in my family (and friends) got earrings for Christmas that year and I was hooked.

I’m a wife, a daughter, a sister and a mommy, and mostly I’m one of the luckiest people on the face of this earth. It’s a bit ironic, considering the fact that for first 30-odd (and they were odd) years of my life all I wanted was to be someone else, anyone else. I never thought of myself as having a single creative bone; instead I delivered pizzas, worked with horses and later became a television editor.

My bestest painting friend Elizabeth has two friends who are going through hard family times, and when I was at her studio yesterday she asked me to make a guardian angel for them, a white one. I worked on a 9 x 12 canvas, purple on the top and a rose red on the bottom. The angel’s dress is made of white paper, and at the bottom it’s trimmed with blue scallops and a saying from one of my favorite artists, Rodney White. OOh, I love his work so much! Anyhoo, I like thinking that I’ve got myvery own angel, as opposed to sharing with someone…. So, here’s my angel, all ready to be made into necklaces for Liz’s friends!

This dress is inspired from a trip to Western SiChuan two years ago where I saw fairiest natural scenes which moved a girl going together to cry, where most beautiful Tibeten women and most manly and bold Tibeten men live. Can you imagine holy snow mountains in the distance, crystal blue stream galloping through ten of thousands pink and white azalea full in blossom? Can you imagine a lake with bright purple, blue, green, white colored water? Can you imagine you sit in an outdoor natural hot spring surrounded by sublime natural beauty? Can you imagine a treking road along with fancy trees in yellowish green leaves like something can only appear in impressionism paintings?

I love nomad in Asia, the ways to wear bright colored garments, the heart of an innocent child, the courage to abandon the past and pursuit a new beginning, the longing for spiritual freedom…

According to many buyers’ request, I shorten the length to mid calf, so that the shape will look fitter and show your beautiful boots. It looks much better than the original look. And also I improved the sleeves, they are 3/4 sleeve now, your arms will look longer and slimmer, and you may mix and match with this design with long gloves or arm warmers.
